What is a Limited OB Ultrasound and Why Should I Get One?

A limited obstetrical ultrasound is one that is performed in the first trimester, or the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It is called a ‘limited’ ultrasound because it is used only to diagnose three things: that you are pregnant, that the embryo is located inside of the uterus, and to date your pregnancy. Here at Guiding Star Siouxland, our limited ultrasounds are performed by a BSN RN, trained in limited obstetric ultrasound by the National Institute of family and Life Advocates. The ultrasound scans are then sent digitally to our medical director who will read the ultrasound and write an ultrasound report confirming dates of pregnancy and if there is a pregnancy inside or outside of the uterus. Once the report is received by our office, we contact you and are able to share that information with you!

Why should you get an early ultrasound? Many times, women don’t know exactly how far along they are in their pregnancy due to irregular cycles, an early ultrasound will give you a more concrete picture of your pregnancy and help you better plan for your prenatal services. It also answers the very important question of if the embryo is inside of the uterus. A pregnancy that occurs outside of the uterus is referred to as an ectopic pregnancy, and can be a medical emergency for the woman. If this is identified in our clinic, we will refer you on to emergency services. Here at Guiding Star, we have a lot of great services available to women, and we would love to also give you information about those and get you set up with support while you are here for your ultrasound!
