BIRTH & POSTPARTUM DOULA SERVICES
What is a Birth Doula?
At Guiding Star Siouxland, we believe your partner is an irreplaceable support person that provides love and security, yet he or she has not likely had training regarding birth support. A doula has invested time in developing a relationship with you, is professionally trained, and remains with you, providing emotional and physical support, through your entire birth!
Studies have shown the effects of having a doula present for your birth include:
- shorter labors with fewer complications
- reduced rates of intervention and augmentation, including the use of forceps, pitocin, epidural, and Cesarean-section
- more satisfaction with partners and the birth experience
- less postpartum anxiety and depression
- better breastfeeding outcomes
- reduced cost of obstetric care
What is a Postpartum Doula?
A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides non-medical support to families in the days and weeks following childbirth. Unlike a birth doula who focuses on labor and delivery, a postpartum doula helps with the transition to parenthood, offering physical, emotional, and informational support to new parents and their families.
Studies have shown that the addition of a postpartum doula to the support system of a mom after birth reduces the risk of adverse postpartum mental health issues.
