Poem: Voice from the Inside
Here I am inside your womb
To you it’s nothing but my tomb
I’m growing daily, hear your voice
Knowing that I have no choice
Unwanted, unplanned, unloved you call me
So you take my life, to set yourself free
I have tears in my eyes, the pain I can feel
Well you’re telling yourself that I’m not truly “real”
With so much to offer, and much love to give
Death was your answer, when mine was to live
My heartbeat was strong and I looked just like you
With dimples and smiles and eyes of bright blue
My weight was healthy, I’m just the right size
With big chunky cheeks and rolls on my thighs
I’m a beautiful baby, the love of a mother
And if that’s not you, it is certainly another
And if I were growing with health complications
Or in the midst of some bad situation
Or if I was growing inside of a teen
Or drug abused woman out on City streets
I still am a baby and growing each day
That’s something you’re willing to just throw away?
“Your body, your choice!” You scream all day long
Well I’m in here screaming “Mommy, you’re wrong!”
I’m in here inside you, a person, I’m growing!
Just look at your tummy, you just might be showing!
The thumps of my heartbeat are my painful scream
Of life for myself to be more than a dream
So, growing here inside your womb
Please Mommy, don’t let this become my tomb.
